Rare photos of rescue operations over The Sound in October 1943.

Small and large boats, below and on deck, on the beach as a memorial, all with the goal of reaching the promised land on the other side of the coast.

Børge Laursen and his friend Jacob Andersen are seen here on their little fishing boat “Marie”. From the carpentry port, they managed to make 10 crossings. On each trip, they had 2-3 people stored under the herring nets. October is the season for herring and the catch typically takes place at night which gave a good excuse for the many night trips.

This boat can be seen at The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
